Hired auto coverage provides coverage for a vehicle that is rented on a temporary basis. Most commercial auto policies provide coverage for newly aquired vehicles for a limited period of time after which there is no coverage if the vehicle is not added to the policy.
Hired auto however is for the temporary renting of a vehicle and in this case the vehicle would not fall under the newly acquired provision of the coverage since the intention is to only "hire" the vechile temporarily. Some examples of when this may apply would be when a truck is rented while one of the owned trucks is in the shop for service.
Commercial auto policies do not automatically include this coverage. It has to be specifically requested. This is in contrast to personal auto policies that include hired auto even though people often choose to go ahead and pay for extra coverage from a car rental agency for the "no questions asked" convenience instead of relying on their personal auto policy to cover this.
